BERLIN OPEN THEATRE
ABOUT
Berlin Open Theatre, founded by director Olivia Cole, is a theatre collective composed of English-speaking performers based in Berlin. Our mission is to create work that is inspiring, meaningful, and deeply relevant to contemporary international audiences. While our origins lie in producing classic works, we now specialize in transforming familiar narratives into something bold and redefining.
In 2023, our production of Frankenstein premiered at Theater Verlängertes Wohnzimmer before transferring to the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it enjoyed a successful 11-performance run, receiving positive reviews for its creativity and execution.
In 2024, we premiered The House of Bernarda Alba, which attracted large audiences during its 6-performance run at Theater Verlängertes Wohnzimmer. This production was in collaboration with the Verein ‘Shakespeare Reloaded’.
We develop our productions over 4-5 months, allowing ideas to evolve organically and collaboratively within the ensemble. This extended rehearsal process provides the time needed for deep exploration and thoughtful refinement, ensuring that each production is carefully crafted.
In our rehearsal room, we frequently draw on the techniques of Michael Chekhov, whose focus on creating a vivid sense of environment and atmosphere is central to our approach. We believe that a rich, immersive atmosphere is crucial for both the audience’s engagement and the performers’ ability to fully inhabit their roles.
